The Diaries of a Soldier Girl

Imagination clashes with the real world in a book about survival, the awe and wonder of friendship and graduating from a top college. Ms. Johnson, who supervises a group of flunkies, selects three girls to interview for a memoir about the challenges students encounter their first two years at an all- girls military boarding school. Three unlikely friends: Carla, Starr, and Darlene find themselves singled out and bullied almost every day by authoritative Staff Sergeant Neil. Starr McKenzie, is the first student tormented by Neil and his group of enablers. Starr is coerced into reading her sacred, emotional poetry and private letters from friends and family out loud. Darlene Evans feels sorry for Starr McKenzie and has a sudden change of heart, determined to help Starr earn a college degree. Darlene wakes up early every morning to help Starr pass locker inspections each week, hopeful her new bestie will receive a passing grade. Darlene’s plans to marry Neil and buy a house together after graduating college become an impossibility when Darlene learns that the love of her life is accused of a serious crime. Neil plots revenge on all of his enemies -in a series of parodies Starr writes about ways of making it out of military school alive. The Diaries of a Soldier Girl is a teen fiction book told in flashbacks in the form of diary entries- tackling problems related to growing up such as: bullying, abusive relationships and teen suicide, as a group of three girls enter into adulthood. The Diaries of a Soldier Girl will keep young readers turning the pages long into the night.
